Part 2: My top 5 tips to Happy Hormones

Hormonal imbalances are becoming more and more common with the lifestyles that we lead. With chemicals and pollution in the air, the chemicals that are being sprayed on our vegetables and the stressful lives we have it is all contributing to imbalances. I have compiled these tips that you can start doing at home to try and get your hormones back on track.

  1. Maintain a healthy lifestyle
    • This includes healthy wholefoods and regular exercise. I suggest to clients to follow the JERF (Just Eat Real Foods) principle and limit their, dairy, gluten and sugar consumption.
  2. Limit your exposure to phytoestrogens
    • Phytoestrogens can mimic oestrogen in the body throwing your oestrogen progesterone balance out of whack which will then link you to many other issues. I would suggest that you avoid plastics and especially heating food in plastic as well.
  3. Try your best to buy organic or spray free vegetables.
    • We are seeing that our fruit and vegetables are being more and more important and we cannot guarantee what they have been sprayed with. All of these chemicals are known to be endocrine disruptors so it would be best to try and buy organic, spray free or at least follow the dirty dozen and clean fifteen lists.
  4. Manage your stress levels
    • When stress is in your life no part of your body works the way it’s meant to. Long term stress can not only effect your hormones but can affect your digestive system and the absorption of nutrients, it can cause muscle tension, high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, reflux, diarrhoea, migraine, headaches the list goes on and on. Stress can also affect our adrenal glands and we can find our body being in fight or flight mode all the time, this doesn’t leave anytime for our bodies to actually rest.
  5. Start tracking your cycles so you can see if there have been any improvements.
    • Tracking your cycle makes it much easier for naturopaths to know what is going on with your hormones and we can narrow down if any triggers to throwing your hormones out of whack. There are many apps such as M. cycles or clue that can help do this for you.
