Foods to fuel fertility

I am seeing more and more couples wanting to start a family but only falling into troubles. The good news is, there are plenty of ways that you can support your fertility naturally. As a naturopath, I feel it is essential to start with couple’s diet. A good rule of thumb is to avoid, wheat, dairy and sugar but there are also other key foods that can contribute to increasing fertility for both men and women. So here are some of the top foods for fertility that I recommend.

Avocado

Good quality healthy fats are essential in making and maintaining healthy hormone levels, so avocados are a great choice. The combination of healthy fats, folate and blood-sugar balancing fibre make it a perfect fertility food.

Salmon

We all know we need to get more fish into our diets so it isn’t a shock that this is on the list. Fertility issues can be linked to inflammation in your body and oily fish like salmon are packet full of anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3’s are also essential for supporting healthy sperm production.

Need a plant-based option? You could try chia seeds, flaxseeds and walnuts every day.

Green leafy vegetables

Folate is essential for fertility and preventing neural tube defects. Dark leafy greens and full of easily absorbable folate and can also help with digestion and liver detoxification. So why not fill up your plate with green vegetables rather than purely relying on a supplement.

Warming foods

In traditional Chinese medicine it is suggested that good circulation is essential for making the womb work. I suggest to couples to start having more warming foods to boost your circulation. Ginger and Turmeric are also powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidants so why don’t you make a delicious warming soup with your ginger and turmeric. Ginger specifically is a circulatory stimulant.

Oysters

Oysters contain a lot of zinc, and zinc is essential for both women and men trying to conceive. Low zinc can be a problem for those struggling to conceive as well as maintaining pregnancy. Zinc is great for men too, too keep your sperm in tip top shape. Oysters are one of the best sources of zinc you can get and of course it has a reputation for being an aphrodisiac.

Pumpkin seeds

Hate oysters? Well why not try pumpkin seeds, or even have both, they are another great source of zinc. These can be snacked on daily to ensure your getting your daily dose of zinc. Other foods that contain zinc are red meats, legumes, nuts, and oats.

Dark chocolate

Yes, we all love chocolate, and guess what you don’t have to give it up, you just need to eat really good quality dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is jam packed with antioxidants which is great for fertility. Make sure you give some to your partner as well as it can help him boost his sperm count and sperm quality.
